Teacher (PT)

GENERAL STATEMENT

The primary function of the classroom teacher is to facilitate the development of the student in the cognitive, affective, ethical and physical (include psycho-motor) domains of his/her/their growth. To this end the teacher will provide an educational programme for all students, and will assist in other school programmes as required by Board policies and contractual obligations.

The secondary function of the classroom teacher is to embrace the school’s mission, support this shared vision of education, and willingly enforce the regulations of the school as stated in values.

The teacher reports to the Principal.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The teacher:

  • is responsible for the growth and development of students in accordance with the mission of the school;
  • uses a variety of age-appropriate teaching strategies that are suitable for different student learning outcomes; carefully prepares a variety of creative assessment tasks through which the student may actively learn;
  • follows the school’s curriculum and uses a variety of assessment tools to collect evidence of student learning, and clearly communicates these to students;
  • plans effectively for optimal learning, including, but not limited to, using instructional time effectively, using appropriate instructional materials, setting appropriate academic expectations, clearly communicating homework and assignments and establishing a positive classroom tone that supports student learning;
  • is proactive about investigating and using resources available in the school and beyond;
  • makes an effort to individualize the learning process where appropriate and practical to do so;
  • offers additional strands of reinforcement to students who are experiencing short, medium or long-term academic difficulties;
  • participates in Student Support Teams as appropriate;
  • makes continual efforts for professional growth through reading, discussion, and professional growth activities;
  • writes regular reports assessing student growth and progress in keeping with the school’s assessment procedure;
  • attends conferences with parents and students that foster understanding about learning;
  • punctually completes requested administrative tasks as appropriate;
  • participates in the budgeting and purchasing process as appropriate;
  • participates with the administration to help to develop a continuous improvement plan for both the individual teacher and the school;
  • sets annual goals as a part of professional renewal and lifelong learning;
  • participates in the development of the curriculum;
  • participates in faculty meetings;
  • uses appropriate technologies to support teaching and learning;
  • provides meaningful lesson plans for classes when absent;
  • is supportive of marketing initiatives that will develop the school;
  • maintains a professional dress code;
  • willingly shares ideas and resources with colleagues;
  • manifests a positive and cordial professional image.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO STUDENTS

The teacher:

  • respects the individuality and personality of each student;
  • establishes a classroom climate based on mutual respect;
  • shows respect for the cultural diversity of students;
  • conveys his/her/their esteem for students;
  • is flexible and open to working with students in a variety of ways;
  • acts as a role model to students, exemplifying courtesy, honesty and fairness as stipulated in the school’s values and behaviour guidelines;
  • helps students work effectively – independently and in a group;
  • initiates and supports contact with students outside of class to solve problems, provide help, and build support;
  • provides a safe environment for teaching and learning;
  • showcases student accomplishment;
  • promotes authentic activities that promote learning outside the classroom.

The teacher:

  • recognises that teaching is a cooperative and collaborative endeavour and participates as such;
  • offers and seeks advice and assistance where appropriate;
  • helps to provide meaningful support to new colleagues;
  • shows respect for the cultural diversity of colleagues.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO PARENTS AND COMMUNITY

The teacher:

  • is friendly, approachable, and available to students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors; is diplomatic and discreet in all professional dealings with parents and colleagues;
  • develops open communication with parents and fosters ongoing dialogue between school and home;
  • responds to parental concerns and communicates these where appropriate to Department Chairs, Principals or Head of School;
  • professionally supports and contributes to a positive image of AIS.
