VIDEO | Music & Art Classes Merge for Innovative Unit

March 03, 2021

Through music and visual arts, Grade 5 students explored how to use elements and principles of music and art in a collaborative new unit. Students composed their own music in Music class and then created their own artwork in Art class – while listening to their music.

The Arts Department teamed up for this new, innovative unit that focuses on the pioneer of abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky. In the first phase of this Unit, students studied Kandinsky in Art class. First, they analyzed the artwork he created as a response to music. Next, they listened to the musical compositions that Kandinsky listened to create his series of paintings called “Composition 1-10”.

At the same time in Music class, the students worked on their own compositions. They had the opportunity to play with real electronic instruments like synthesisers and twist electronic music components such as oscillators, filters and delays. The students spent several weeks recording and producing their final music compositions.

After completing their musical pieces, students entered the last phase of this collaborative project. They took their musical compositions to Art class and created paintings while they listened to their own music. Enjoy some of their paintings below.
