Grade 1’s Cultural Celebration | VIDEO

December 07, 2022

Grade 1 students took us on a trip around the world when they held a cultural celebration in the STEMzone. Their parents were there to cheer them on as they performed. You can too as you watch the video below!

During the cultural celebration, students shared their learning from their recent unit of inquiry: ‘Cultures, Celebrations and Traditions’. Grade 1 Teacher Ali Mullens said, “We shared languages throughout the class, languages such as Hebrew, Chinese, Russian and German. It gave the students an opportunity to really share who they are.”

Throughout the unit the children didn’t just learn about their own cultures, they were given the opportunity to inquire and investigate into other classmates’ cultures too. “We made a big, cross-comparison chart of different celebrations and we found the similarities and differences within those cultures and within those celebrations,” Mullens explained.

The children also prepared and displayed a life-sized cutout of their bodies and on that they have displayed all of their learning. There are topics such as clothing, culture and celebrations.

“I think this unit is really important for the children at this current age in Grade 1 because it teaches them about respect and respecting other cultures,” Mullens said.
