A walk in
the woods
Autumn sonnet – Grade 10 winner
Dusk t’was when I wearily wandered,
Crackling autumn leaves under my bare feet.
Was living worthwhile I stopped and pondered?
Deafening silence, no sound of a tweet.
Untrodden ground so so bereft of life,
Descending darkness and words unspoken
Exhausted with adversity and strife?
Cruel winds batter, bitterly frozen.
My fate is blurred and no radiance around,
Heavy mist weighing down millions of boughs;
How are trunks standing erect on the ground?
Despair swiftly stifles me till my toes.
Oh this drudgery, forever to flee!
Oh this drudgery, forever to flee!
